Internationals: Cathcart & Mariappa Hit 50 Caps
Adrian Mariappa and Craig Cathcart each hit significant milestones in their international careers yesterday, reaching 50 caps for their respective countries.
Mariappa was named captain as he reached his half-century in a tight 1-1 draw with Guyana, the final match of Jamaica’s CONCACAF Nations League group. The country finished top of the group with five wins and one draw, scoring 21 goals and conceding one.
“It’s a very proud moment for me to lead the team out on my 50th cap,” said Mariappa. “It was a tough game but we showed good character to come back and end the group unbeaten.”
Elsewhere, Cathcart reached his milestone in Frankfurt as Northern Ireland were beaten 6-1 by Germany in a Euro 2020 qualifier. The Green and White army took the lead early on through Michael Smith but the home side soon turned the game around.
Cathcart’s side were guaranteed third place before the game and results elsewhere confirmed they will play away to Bosnia-Herzegovina in their first play-off match, as they look to qualify for next summer’s tournament.
Pontus Dahlberg featured for Sweden Under-21s in a UEFA Under-21 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland but his side were beaten 4-1, leaving them fourth in their group.
Ryan Cassidy started for the Republic of Ireland Under-19s, who missed out on qualification to the Elite Round of the UEFA Under-19 European Championships after a 2-0 defeat to Austria.
