Lancaster: “The Fans Have Made A Big Difference For Us This Season”

Watford FC Ladies have had a fantastic start to the season, winning seven out of their nine league games to date and sitting in second place, with a game in hand over current leaders Crawley. Recently appointed Head Coach Clinton Lancaster has given his thoughts on the season so far.

“It’s great being the Head Coach of this fantastic team, and it is something I am very proud of,” he said. “I love coming to training every week and the atmosphere is great. The players have reacted brilliantly to the changes we’ve made, and we have been on a great run of late which, of course, we want to continue."

The Golden Girls have a lot of maturity on their team and a wealth of experience.

“We have a lot of leaders in the group which is something I wanted to encourage in the players,” continued Lancaster. “It is so important that the younger players have those types of more experienced players to learn from. Having that blend can only benefit the team and is one of the main differences with regards to last season. It helps us massively to have players who are experienced as they know what it takes to achieve success.”

Watford's season so far has been a prolific one, as the Ladies have scored 28 goals in their nine league games, averaging three goals per game.

“It’s so pleasing to see that we are being more clinical in the final third,” said the Head Coach. “We have worked a lot on our creativity and finishing, and it’s always pleasing to see when sessions are paying off and coming together.

“What is really good to see is the variety of the goals we are scoring and the quality of the build-up play. We cannot afford to ease up so we will continue to work on these areas throughout the season.”

Today, Watford FC ladies enter the draw for the second round of The Women's FA Cup. The fixture will be played on the December 1, 2019 and you can listen to the draw on Talk Sport 2 today at 4.30pm.

“We enter the FA Cup in December and it is a competition we will look to progress in,” said Lancaster. “After we beat Buckland at home last season, the third round draw saw us take a trip up to Middlesbrough in our first game of the year in January and we came away with a fantastic 7-2 win.

“That, of course, led to the big one against Manchester City, who went on to win the competition. It was an amazing day for the club and the squad showed a lot of resilience and discipline to hold them until around the 65th minute, before they eventually ran out as 3-0 winners.”

In the run up to Christmas, Watford only have two league games and the aim is to take six points from a possible six.

“They are tough tests and one of them is away from home, which makes them a bit trickier, but our expectations change in no way,” said Lancaster.

“We know how important it is to finish the year well and by the time we play these two games, we would have played everyone once which will give us a really good idea of where we sit in terms of the league this season. If we can win all three, we will be set up to attack 2020 from a great position.”

On Women's Football Weekend 2019 — which takes place on November 16-17 this year — The Golden Girls are at home and Lancaster wants all the support the club can get.

“The fans have made a big difference for us this season,” he said. “The support we had when we were away to Chichester was amazing, we could hear them singing throughout the whole game. It pushes the girls in the game and really shows to them they are playing for a reason.

“Women's football is on the rise, and we want to be part of it. We are part of it. Please come down, show your support and you can be part of it too!”
