Deeney: “We Need To Make This A Fortress”

Hornets players and coaches are calling on supporters to get down to Vicarage Road and help push the team to a third consecutive home win against Wolves on New Year’s Day.

“The crowd have been really impressive,” said Assistant Coach Craig Shakespeare. “The players have put in performances and the atmosphere has gone through the roof and as players and management we recognise the role the supporters have to play. But we know have to get them off their seats and our aim is to do that.”

The playing and coaching staff know the encouragement works both ways, and that they first have to do their bit to give the Vicarage Road faithful something to get excited about.

“You can't expect fans to pay their hard-earned money and come here and be great all the time when we lose,” said Troy Deeney.

“They’ve got a right to hammer us when we have been bad. We’ve been bad at times but it’s up to the players to create the atmosphere. The fans want to see hard work and people fighting for the shirt.

“If you chase a ball down, if you win a tackle you weren't meant or win a header, it gets the crowd involved. They've seen that in the last few weeks and the atmosphere has gone through the roof. We need to make this a fortress and a hard place to play.”

Deeney’s mentality is contagious and has rubbed off on summer signing Ismaïla Sarr, who said the passion shown by the supporters gives him an extra push each time he plays.

“I want to thank the fans,” said Sarr. “I run a lot because of them and if they keep going like this, I am going to make more runs for the team.”

Tickets for Watford v Wolves in the Premier League on New Year's Day are still on general sale, although there is limited availability. Get down and support the Hornets at Vicarage Road.
