Callum Whelan joined Watford from Manchester United in August 2019 and quickly became a mainstay in the Under-23 side.
The midfielder played alongside the likes of Marcus Rashford in the youth teams at Manchester United, and put in a particularly impressive performance in an FA Youth Cup tie against QPR in 2015/16, when he scored and set up Rashford for a chance which led to the winning penalty.
In 2017 Whelan was shortlisted for the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at Manchester United, and he stepped up to the Under-23 side for the 2017/18 season.
He later earned a loan move to Port Vale in January 2019, before joining the Hornets on a permanent contract in the summer of 2019, signing a one-year deal with the option of a further year.
His performances for the Hornets' Under-23s were rewarded and he travelled with the first team squad for the Carabao Cup tie away at Everton in October 2019, although he was not named in the 18-man squad.
The next month it was announced he would be training with the first team indefinitely.
